Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins at Provident Metals

The Perth Mint launched this well-known series in 1990. This series was the first, along with the Australian Kangaroo Gold series to feature images of a native species. What makes this series unique is that while these coins always showcase a Kookaburra, the image of the native bird changes with every new release. Learn all about this iconic series, right here at Provident Metals.

Design of the Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin

The obverse of these coins has always displayed the reigning British monarch on the obverse. In 2024, King Charles will be shown, marking the first time in the series that someone other than Queen Elizabeth was shown. Over the years the designs have featured the following images.

  • 1990 – 1998: Raphael Maklouf’s image of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • 1999 – 2018: Ian Rank-Broadley’s depiction of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • 2019 – 2023: Jody Clark’s rendition of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • 2024 – Present: Dan Thorne’s effigy of King Charles III.

The reverse of these coins always showcases a Kookaburra, however, the image of the kookaburra changes with every new issue.

These coins also have a high-quality finish to give the kookaburra a glossy appearance. In 2018, the series upgraded from a purity of .999 silver to .9999 pure silver.

Mintage and Availability

The series debuted in 1990 with just a 1 oz silver coin. In 1992, the series expanded to include a 2 oz, 10 oz, and a 1 kilogram option. These four weights were issued annually until 2010 when the 2 oz silver coin was dropped from the series. Coins are still issued annually in the other three weights.

The face value of these coins is the following:

  • 1 kilogram: $30
  • 10 oz: $10
  • 2 oz: $2
  • 1 oz: $1

From 1990 until 2010, the annual mintage cap for the 1 oz silver coin was 300,000. The mintage cap was hit in 1990 and 1991 but wasn’t reached again until 2008. In 2011, the mintage cap was raised to 500,000.

All other sizes have an unlimited mintage.
