The kookaburra bird is the largest member of the kingfisher species and is a quintessential symbol of the Australian outback. Indigenous to Australia, the kookaburra is known for its distinctive call, which sounds uncannily like human laughter. The Perth Mint first introduced the Silver Kookaburra series in 1990, making it the longest coin program in the mint’s history.

The obverse features a special 30th anniversary Stuart Devlin depiction of a kookaburra perched on a tree stump surrounded by Australian tree branches, as appeared on the debut release of the Kookaburra series in 1990. The new Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears in a smaller inset with the special inscriptions 1990 and 2020. ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR, are also inscribed.
The reverse features a kookaburra perched on a roof in mid-call, facing the rising sun. Inscriptions include “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 30th ANNIVERSARY”, the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark, and the coin’s weight, purity, and year of issue. Each coin’s reverse also features a security feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter within the coin’s AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA heading, which is only detectable under a magnifying glass.
