In 2007, the Perth Mint introduced its second annual bullion coin program with the Australian Koala Silver Coin. Following the lead of the Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin series, this coin program features unique images of the koala in every new issue. The reverse of this series changes images with every new release. While the image is always of a Koala, the image of the koala changes every year. The obverse field features the reigning British monarch at the time. In 2024, King Charles III will be displayed on the obverse. This marks the first time in the history of the series that someone other than Queen Elizabeth II will be shown.

In 2018, the Perth Mint started to use a purity of .9999 pure silver, rather than the .999 silver that was used from 2007 to 2017.
The series debuted in 2007 with just a 1 oz silver option. The very next year, the coin program expanded to include a 1 kilogram, 10 oz, and 1/2 oz weight. In 2016, the 1/2 oz and 10 oz coins were dropped from the series. Since then, just the 1 oz and 1 kilogram weights are released annually. The 1 oz coin has a mintage cap of 300,000 every year while the 1 kilogram silver coin has a mint-to-order mintage.
