Certification Process

While there are many places that will grade coins, there are two that are by far the most popular and most respected in the industry, the NGC and the PCGS.

The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) was established in 1985 with the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) being formed just a few years later in 1987. Each coin-grading service uses the Sheldon Scale of 1 to 70 to grade coins.

Each grading house features a similar grading process. You send them your coin, where at least two numismatists will evaluate the coin, give it a grade, and then return it in a protective plastic slab to preserve its graded condition.

Grading Terminology

The NGC and the PCGS each use unique terminology alongside the standard numerical grade. These terms further help identify the coin you’re investing in. Some popular terminology you’ll see are the following:

• MS: Mint State. These coins are in uncirculated condition and are given to coins within a 60 and a 70.
• ER/ FS: Early Release/ First Strike. These coins were received for grading within 30 days of the coin’s initial release.
• FDOI: First Day of Issue. These coins were received for grading within 24 hours of the coin’s initial release.

The most common grades you’ll see when purchasing a certified Eagle Silver Coin are MS70 and MS69.

• MS70: Perfect specimen. These coins have their full, original mint luster with no post-production marks of any kind even when viewed under 5x magnification.
• MS69: Near-perfect specimen. These coins have their full, original mint luster with a max of two minor detractions. These can include hairlines or small contact marks.
