Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins

The official gold bullion coin of Canada is the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin. This coin program was established in 1979 and has released a new issue annually ever since.

The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins were the second gold bullion coins produced for investment, after the South African Krugerrand. These coins have always featured the sugar maple leaf design from Walter Ott on the reverse, with an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. In 2024, the obverse design was updated to feature King Charles III. This marks the first time in the series that someone other than Queen Elizabeth has been featured.

• 1979-1989: Displays the Queen at the age of 39.
• 1990-2004: Designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt – features the Queen at the age of 64.
• 2005-2023: Designed by Susanna Blunt – showcases the Queen at the age of 79.
• 2024: Designed by Steven Rosati – features the effigy of King Charles III.

The series offers coins in various sizes ranging from 1 Gram to 1 Troy oz. The 1 oz weight has been offered every year since the inception of the coin program back in 1979. The various fractional ounces have been added throughout the years.

The Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin Series is also among the most diverse coin programs on the market today. Over the years, the RCM has released a number of unique additions to the series such as anniversary coins, special privy mark coins, and even .99999 pure gold coins.

These coins have also been an innovator in security features such as the laser-micro-engravings added to the reverse in 2013 and the radial lines added to both fields in 2015. In 2020, coins were released with MintID packaging that included a microchip to add as a secure form of authenticity.

• Animal Portrait Series: This coin series was created in 2017 and features portraits of unique animals. These coins are reverse proof specimens and are offered on 1/4 oz .9999 pure gold coins. The animals featured in the series in order are the Bighorn Sheep, Wolverine, Mustang, Woodland Caribou, Great Horned Owl, Moose, and Lynx.
• Polar Bear Series: Annual release of gold coins featuring a new image of a polar bear on the reverse for every year of release.
• Klondike Gold Rush: Annual release of gold coins featuring unique imagery revolving around the gold rush. The series debuted in 2021.
