The American Eagle Gold Coin from the United States Mint is the only bullion coin from the United States still available in fractional-ounce options. These fractional ounces are offered in both the bullion and proof versions of the coin, with the 1/2 oz gold option representing one of the lowest-minted coins in the range. Provident Metals currently offers Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins to you for purchase online in near-perfect condition.

  • First released in 1987!

When you purchase one of these Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins, Provident Metals offers you an item with a near-perfect certification. Coins with a PR69 certification showcase full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are located outside of the primary focal points only and are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines.

Also available with these coins is a DCAM label inside of the protective plastic slab. The DCAM label stands for deep-cameo and refers to the presence of strong, frosted elements and deeply-mirrored, clear fields.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse side of the Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin. This design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and it originally featured on the obverse of the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin issued by the United States. It depicts Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.

Reverse

American bald eagles are shown on the reverse of Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins. Miley Busiek created this image of a family of American bald eagles exclusively for the American Eagle Gold bullion coins in 1986. The design depicts a male eagle flying over the nest as a female guards a hatchling within the nest.

History

Proof American Eagle Gold Coins were introduced in phases from 1986 to 1988. The 1 oz weight debuted first in 1986 alongside the four weights in the bullion range. These Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coins were next in 1987, followed by the 1/4 and 1/10 oz coins in 1988. Fractional-ounce coins such as these were produced by the Philadelphia Mint with a P mint mark from 1987/1988 to 1993, and the West Point Mint with a W mint mark from 1994 onward. Additionally, date marks on these coins were in Roman numerals through 1991, with Arabic numerals used from 1992 onward.
