The obverse of Gold Sovereigns feature a portrait of the monarch who ruled at the time of the coin’s release. Because these coins enjoyed such a long, successful run, there are a handful of designs available. The one you receive will be randomized depending on our current inventory.
The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci’s St. George and the Dragon. Pistrucci was a gem and coin engraver, and went on to become the Chief Medalist at the Royal Mint. He created this design for the coin’s first issue after the Great Recoinage Act of 1816.
First minted in the late fifteenth century, Gold Sovereigns acted as a worldwide tool of trade for hundreds of years. Reintroduced with the Recoinage Act of 1816, the UK resumed production of Gold Sovereigns from 1817 to 1917. With the onset of WWI, production decreased dramatically as the country abandoned the gold standard. After 1932, Gold Sovereigns were largely issued as bullion coins. Proof versions were released after 1982.
Gold Sovereigns ship in plastic flips. Multiples may come in plastic coin tubes.

"
I've been making purchases from Provident for over a year and a half, and this is my second product review. I took advantage of a Weekly Deals sale to buy a random year AU+ Gold Sovereign coin for only $9.99 over spot, per coin. Having taken advantage of a similar deal for a 2017 200th Anniversary Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Sovereign only 5 weeks earlier, I assumed that Provident would be shipping me another 2017 Sovereign, perhaps to clear out excess inventory. Boy, oh boy, was I in for a surprise. I placed my order on a Sunday, and having paid by eCheck, my order was delivered to my mailbox 6 days later on the following Saturday. I opened up the package and I was floored by what I saw: Provident had sent me a 1912 George V Gold Sovereign produced by the London Mint, and it was in wonderful condition! I would say that the coin easily meets the AU+ grade advertised in the listing, which is impressive for a coin that's 106 years old! The details on the coin are nice and sharp, especially on the reverse (i.e. the engraving of St. George slaying the dragon). The obverse with the bust of George V is also in great condition, and I could even make out clearly with the naked eye the tiny B.M. initials of sculptor Bertram Mackennal at the neckline of the bust. Both sides had some small contact marks but no serious scratches. The ridges of the coin's milled edge are also nice and sharp, and are are pretty much an exact match to those of the 2017 Sovereign. The diameter and thickness of the coin are a perfect match to spec, and on my digital precision scale, the gross weight of my 1912 Sovereign came out as 7.985 grams, which is impressively close to the 7.98805 regulation standard gross weight of a brand-new Sovereign. Even if I dropped the last digit, 7.98 grams would still be impressively close, especially for a 106-year old specimen, and is indicative of how little wear this coin has experienced during its long lifetime. Finally, as one last cherry on top of everything else, to my surprise, Provident delivered the coin in an 22mm Air-Tite holder with the Black Gasket, even though I had already paid for a direct fit 22mm Air-Tite holder as part of my order. This means I got 2 holders for the price of one, giving me a spare that I can use for a future bullion purchase. Once again, I'm just blown away by the amazing value that Provident delivered to me at a discounted sale price. I'm utterly pleased with my purchase, and my commitment to Provident as a go-to bullion dealer with unbeatable prices and top-notch customer service is stronger than ever. Truly, Provident knocked this one out of the park for me. Thank you, Provident Metals!"
