The Barber Coinage was the name used to refer to the designs of the dime, quarter, and half dollar struck by the United States Mint from 1892 to 1916. The series featured a shared obverse design across all three coins, with the two larger denominations sharing the same reverse design element. Charles E. Barber, 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, designed the images featured in the collection. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase $1 Face Value 90% Silver Barber Halves online at Provident Metals.

Charles E. Barber served as the 6th Chief Engraver for 37 years, a record amount of time for any individual to hold the position. His rise to the position came within months of his predecessor’s death in 1879. In fact, that predecessor was his father, William Barber, who served as the 5th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint for 10 years from 1869 to late 1879.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse side of all 90% Silver Barber Halves in this product listing. The depiction of Liberty shown here is in right-profile relief and was developed by Charles E. Barber in 1892. In this unique image of Liberty, she has strong facial features with a cap holding her hair up in a bun at the back of her head. She wears a crown wreath on her head that is tied at the back. Inscriptions include In God We Trust above the design, six stars behind Liberty and seven in front of her face for 13 in total, and a date mark below.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States is shown on the reverse face of 90% Silver Barber Halves. Designed by Barber for this release, the heraldic eagle has featured on countless American coins dating back to 1794 when it was first introduced on the earliest American coins by Robert Scot. United States of America, Half Dollar, and E Pluribus Unum are all inscribed on this face of the coins. There is a half-moon cluster of 13 stars above his head, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other.

History

The Barber Coinage was available from the United States Mint from 1892 to 1916. The coins in this series were eventually replaced by three distinctive designs, a departure from the shared approach of the Barber Series. The new designs were the Winged Liberty (Mercury) Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, and Walking Liberty Half Dollar.
