One of the most popular French coin designs of all time is known as Le Semeuse. Designed by Oscar Roty in 1897, the image known as The Sower first appeared on French silver coins issued by the Third Republic from 1897 to 1911. In 1960, the design made its final debut with the release of the last silver coins of the French franc. Today, you have the chance to get 5 Francs France Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.

Le Semeuse is widely regarded as the inspiration for Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty. The design that now features on the obverse side of the American Eagle Silver Coin first appeared on the US Half Dollar in 1916. Weinmans left-profile effigy of Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon bears a striking resemblance to Le Semeuse, or the Sower. For example, both allegorical figures are wearing a Phrygian cap.

Obverse

On the obverse field of 5 Francs France Silver Coins, you will find Le Semeuse. Designed by Oscar Roty, the image shows a female allegory in left-profile relief walking along with a bag of seeds in her left hand as her right hand sows seeds in a field. The inscriptions on this side include REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE and O. ROTY.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 5 Francs France Silver Coin comes with sprigs. There are three sprigs on this side that include wheat, acorns, and olives. The remainder of the field features only the inscriptions of LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE, 5 FRANCS, and the date mark. These coins come with an edge inscription as well that repeats the national motto in French as inscribed on the reverse field of the coin.

History

The 5 Francs Silver Coin was available from 1960 to 1969. It was introduced with the redenomination of French currency and the debut of the New Franc. The Sower design continued to feature on the 5 Francs coin from 1970 to 2001, but the coins issued after 1969 had no silver content and were produced with a cupronickel alloy.

Ordering

These 5 Francs France Silver Coins are available with individual protective flips. The coins have .835 pure silver content and are roughly the size of the silver US Half Dollar of the 20th century. The date marks available here range from 1960 to 1969 and cover the last issue of silver Francs in this denomination. Please bear in mind you may receive coins with the same dates if you buy several.
