On the obverse of 2022 Niue Chibi Christmas Elf Shaped Silver Coins there is a portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This design was released by The Royal Mint in 1998 and is credited to renowned English sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscriptions also appear on the obverse that read ELIZABETH II, NIUE, 2022, 2 DOLLARS, 1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER.
The reverse side of the 2022 Niue Christmas Elf Shaped 1 oz Silver Coin features a Chibi-style depiction of Buddy from the movie Elf. Here Buddy wears his traditional elf costume consisting of a hat, green shirt, and yellow stockings. He also has his arms open wide to help spread the holiday spirit to all.
The script for Elf was written in 1993 by David Berenbaum, a full ten years before the movie would premiere in theaters. The original screenplay had a fairly dark tone, which turned director Jon Favreau away from the project. However, after some tweaking, he was able to make the story more family-oriented. He then lined up a stellar cast including Will Ferrell, James Caan, and Zoey Deschanel, before firing up the cameras in December 2002. The film then debuted the following holiday season and his since then become a cherished Christmas classic.
