History

The Leaning Tower of Pisa has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and holds the distinction of being one of the world’s most photographed buildings. The identity of its original architect isn’t conclusively known, but it can be fairly said that perhaps no other architect’s work has ever been more positively defined by an accidental flaw: the unanticipated subsidence that provided its signature “leaning” look by the time of its completion. The tower has since seen multiple efforts at restoration and preservation that have also focused on keeping its iconic “lean” intact.
