The American Eagle Silver Coin Series took off in a new direction in mid-2021. After more than 35 years with the heraldic eagle on the reverse of the coin, the US Mint halted production of that design in June 2021, swapped out its coin dies, and resumed coining 2021-dated American Eagles with an all-new depiction of the bald eagle on the reverse. That new design from Emily Damstra enters its first full year of production in 2022 as the future of the series. Highlights:
Emily Damstra submitted this design of the bald eagle to the United States Mint in 2020 for consideration as the new design in the series. She is currently a member of the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program and her design was submitted alongside more than 30 other options for the US Mint and Treasury to consider in replacing the heraldic eagle.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2022 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is an effigy of Lady Liberty. This effigy is known as Walking Liberty and was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman for the US half dollar. The field includes Liberty walking toward the sun near a mountain on the horizon. While her right hand is outstretched, her left carries the branches of oak and laurel, and the US flag is draped around her figure. Inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2022, and the original AW signature mark from Weinman.
Reverse
The reverse side of 2022 American Eagle Silver Coins comes with a depiction of the bald eagle in flight. As the eagle soars downward through the sky, it flexes its wings as it extends its talons clutching an oak branch. The inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
Ms. Damstra has vast experience working on coin designs for both the US Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint. In addition to this new design on the American Eagle, she has developed designs for the America the Beautiful Series. At the Royal Canadian Mint, she worked on both the Canadian Wildlife Series and the Birds of Prey Series.
