Obverse
On the obverse of 2021 Tokelau Icon Silver Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. The current monarch of England, Elizabeth II has been on the throne since 1952 and has featured in various portraits of British and Commonwealth coins. This design captures the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Created in 1998, it featured on British coins until 2015, Australian coins until 2018, and still features on the coinage of the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Niue, and Tokelau. Inscriptions on this face read TOKELAU, 5 DOLLARS, ELIZABETH II, 2021, and 1 OZ FINE SILVER.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2021 Tokelau Icon 1 oz Silver Coin is an image of Mona Lisa. The popular portrait from the Italian Renaissance offers a half-length visual of the feminine figure with the word ICON superimposed over the visual. If you zoom in and out on the reverse of the coin, youll notice that the word ICON appears and disappears based on how close to the eye the coin is.
History
The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1503 and 1506. The painting is considered by many to be the best-known, most talked about, and most written about painting in history. Its current insurance valuation holds a Guinness World Record. The 1962 valuation of the painting was $100 million, the equivalent of $870 million in 2021 dollars.
