Obverse

The obverse field of the 2021 South African Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger. This left-profile bust of Kruger first appeared on former South African Pound denominations in the 1890s. Most notably, it appeared on the South African 1 Pound Gold Coin from 1892 to 1900. The design was modernized in 1967 for the debut of the Krugerrand and again modernized in 1984. The design comes from Otto Schultz. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read Suid-Afrika and South Africa.

Reverse

On the reverse face of 2021 South African Krugerrand Gold Coins is a depiction of the Springbok antelope, a native species found in southern Africa. Its native range includes all of the modern Republic of South Africa and it has been adopted as the national symbol of the nation. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Krugerrand, 2021, and Fyngoud 1/2 oz Fine Gold.

History

In 1980, the continued popularity of the South African Krugerrand Gold Coin led to the introduction of the 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. In 2017, the Rand Refinery and South African Mint introduced 1/20 oz gold coins and a 1/50 oz gold coin, the latter symbolic of the 50th anniversary of the coin series that year. 2017 also saw the debut of the first-ever South African Silver Krugerrand.
