History

All coins in the Big Five series were struck at the South African Mint. This minting institution was established in 1890 by Paul Kruger following the Witwatersrand Gold Rush of 1886. Kruger, who became the first president of the South African Republic in 1883, is perhaps most famous for leading an uprising against the British in the Boer wars. Today, the South African Mint is responsible for producing the central Rand currency of South Africa as well popular collectible coins for local and international markets.
