The fifth-generation effigy of Her Majesty, it shows the Queen at the age of 89 as she wears the stunning George IV State Diadem, a crown from the Crown Jewels collection that has some 1,333 diamonds in its setting. This modern take on the historic Chinese Trade Dollar Silver Coin shows the powerful Chinese dragon as it encircles the globe, with a silhouette of the nation of the Peoples Republic of China in the background. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include TRADE DOLLAR along the top and the East India Companys EIC mint mark at the bottom of the field.
History
Chinese Trade Dollar Silver Coins were issued during the twilight of the Empire of China. The coins were first produced in 1889 when Cixi became Empress Dowager of China following her husbands death. She saw the value in modernizing the Chinese economy and currency, opening Chinese ports to foreign trade, and creating a trade dollar to facilitate simpler commerce between Chinese merchants and global traders. Chinese Trade Dollar Silver Coins were issued right up until the fall of the empire, with 1911 being the last issue before the formation of the Republic of China in 1912.
