History
The 1921 resumption of silver dollar coining required re-casting of dies for the Morgan Dollars. Last issued in 1904, the original dies were long gone. Fortunately, the man who had designed the Morgan Dollars way back in 1878 was now serving as the 7th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. George T. Morgan created new dies to support coining of the 1921 Morgan Dollar, with some 44 million coins issued through December. On December 28, 1921, Peace Dollar coining began with a total of 1 million coins issued in the final days of the year.
