The oriental border design is a nod to the colonial history of Great Britain in the Far East. The design was inspired by the British Trade Dollar, which was issued by Royal Mint facilities in India and the Far East in the 19^th century.

After the Opium Wars in China, ports in the region were forced open by the United Kingdom. At the time, they didnt want British colonial currency in Chinese ports, so British Trade Dollars were used instead.
