The Rwandan Wildlife Series debuted in 2008 with a coin design honoring the gorilla. This original release had a low mintage of only 5,000 coins. The series has since grown, and we are now seeing the ninth coin being released for 2016. Each year, the mint increases the production of these coins.

Obverse

The obverse face showcases the meerkat design created just for these 2016 releases. While the background theme remains the same and still showcases the African continent, the meerkat takes the place of all the animals that have come before it. On this face of the coin, you will also see the year of issue and the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.

Reverse

The reverse image is that of the official Rwanda crest. Engravings on this side of the coin are in the local Kinyarwanda language, and they include the name of the Central Bank of Rwanda, the national motto, and the face value of the coins in Francs.

BH Mayer Mint is a privately owned mint that was founded in 1871 by Bernard Henrix Mayer. Today, the mint is known for producing stunning coinage under the fifth-generation owners.
