The 2014-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin was made with 22 karats of actual gold by the West Point branch of the United States Mint. This bullion product contains a perfect metal balance of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. A proof finish is also included on the coin, which means that both sides are mirror-like in appearance, with the exception of the designs themselves, which are frosted. This type of finish offers great visual contrast.

History

The American Gold Eagle Coin series was introduced in 1986. Each year, the U.S. Mint has released new coin products in the collection. The 1/4 oz American Eagle coin wasnt released until 1988 and was actually struck by the Philadelphia Mint at the time. Production of all weight denominations moved over to the West Point Mint location after 1993, allowing for all coins in the series to be manufactured in the same place.

Obverse

Lady Libertys image is shown on the obverse of the 2014-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this image was taken from his original Double-Eagle design. Lady Liberty is shown walking forward powerfully. Sun rays extend out behind her to show her beauty and radiance. In her hands, Lady Liberty holds two items, including an olive branch and a torch. This image has remained the featured obverse design in the American Gold Eagle Coin series since it was first released.

Reverse

A unique eagle family design is included on the reverse of the 2014-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin. This image was designed by Miley Busiek and has been the featured reverse design for the American Gold Eagle series. The image shows a female eagle with her eaglets resting in a nest. The male eagle flies overhead carrying an olive branch in his talons.
