The 2 oz Silver Continental Dollar Rounds are part of the Colonial Tribute Series from Intaglio Mint. Individual rounds are shipped with protective plastic flips, while orders of 10 rounds arrive in tubs.

In addition to the Continental Dollar, the series includes the Virginia Shilling, which was the only form of currency allowed while the colonies were under British control.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2 oz Silver Continental Dollar Rounds, youll find the design used on the nations most original form of currency. The design features a sun shining down on a sundial. Engravings on the obverse include Mind Your Business under the image and Fugio within the outer rim. Continental Currency 1776 is inscribed along the most outer border.

Reverse

The reverse of these rounds features 13 circles chained together. Each circle represents one of the original colonies and is engraved with the colonys name. American Congress is engraved in a circle surrounding We Are One in the center, both signifying the colonies united front.

History

Before the original colonies issued their own currency, the crown of England issued and control the currency that was circulated. However, one of the many reasons the American colonies gathered to rebel against Great Britain was economic control. Shortly after signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the Continental Congress met regarding the new nations currency. The delegates agreed the colonies needed away to pay off their debts from the war.

During the revolution, the Continental Congress issued a total of $241 million, which today, is valued at much more than a billion dollars. The Continental Dollar was circulated until 1782 when it collapsed to make way for new U.S. coins.
