The symbolism present in the depiction of Italia in this new design from The Allegories Series at the Germania Mint is in line with some of the millennia-old concepts of the figure. For example, Italia wears a turreted, or walled, crown on her head. The concept of the walled crown dates to the Roman Empire and Cybele, a deity of fertility who wore a walled crown and was credited with saving Rome from Hannibal and the Carthaginians. The walled crown remains a symbol of a figure who defends a city.

On the obverse side of 2 oz Silver 2020 Germania The Allegories Italia & Germania Rounds is an image of the two European female personifications. Germany and Italy have long been neighbors in Europe and the two personifications are shown with a friendly attitude in this design. As Italia stands near a pedestal with the Horn of Plenty at her side, Germania stands nearby with her hand on Italias shoulder and her other hand welcoming Italia. Inscriptions include Allegories and 2 oz 999.9 Fine Silver.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2 oz Silver Germania The Allegories Italia & Germania Rounds includes a depiction of the Germania Mints coat of arms. The coat of arms is a detailed seal that has a quartered shield with a crown atop the shield. The shield is flanked on both sides by an oak leaf wreath. The inscriptions are simple and read Germania, 2020, and 10 Mark.

History

Two centuries after Cybele was credited with saving the Roman Empire after the Romans began to worship her figure, the concept of Italia turrita began to evolve some more following the Social War that threatened to split the Italian peninsula. After the war ended, Italia began to stand out as a figure representing unity and peace in one Italy ruled by the Roman Empire.
