The South African Mint and Rand Refinery introduce the Krugerrand 1 oz Gold coin in 1967. While the mintages for the coin in the 1960s were capped at very low levels, market demand in the 1970s drove interest in the Krugerrand higher and with it, the mintage of the coins. Right now, you can buy 1978 South African Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

  • Arrives with individual plastic flips!
  • 12th coin from the Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Series!
  • Final mintage of 6,012,000 gold coins!

  • Paul Kruger is featured on the obverse.
  • Springbok antelope on the reverse.

With your purchase of the 1978 South African Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Coin online from Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that comes with an individual plastic flip. These coins had a mintage of 6,012,000 coins, the highest in the 1970s and the peak of the South African Krugerrand Series.

Paul Kruger is featured on the obverse side of 1978 South African Krugerrand Gold Coins. This image is a left-profile portrait of Kruger that was first featured on gold coins in the 1890s from the historic South African Pound denomination. The portrait is accompanied by inscriptions of SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA.

The Springbok antelope is found in the reverse design of the 1978 Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Coin. This design was first used on South African coins in the 1930s and was featured on various denominations of currency. The design captures the Springbok in right-profile relief. Inscriptions on this side include KRUGERRAND, 1978, and FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD.

The 1970s was the true heyday of the South African Krugerrand. Though still popular today, in the 1970s the Krugerrand was the only choice for gold bullion coin buyers and represented 90% of the gold bullion market by 1980. Economic sanctions and a host of new gold bullion coins from other nations ate into the Krugerrands demand in the 1980s.
