The Indian Eagle Gold Coin from the United States Mint received a makeover in 1907. This was the first redesign of the collection in nearly 70 years and resulted in the introduction of a new design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. An important, though minor, design change occurred in 1908 that resulted in No Motto and With Motto versions of the 1908 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coin being issued over the course of the year. Rarities like the 1908-D Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coin with No Motto are now available to you online from Provident Metals.

These 1908-D Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins are a rare option for modern buyers. The US Mint issued 1908 $10 Indian Eagles both with and without the national motto on the reverse. While more than 1.177 million coins were issued that year with the motto included, there were just 303,350 coins issued without the motto in 1908. The Denver Mint accounted for 1,046,500 coins in this total release, but just 210,000 of those coins were struck without the motto.

Obverse

Lady Liberty features on the obverse side of 1908-D Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins. This design comes from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and depicts Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a tall, feathered headdress. There are 13 stars in a half-moon crescent above her head with 1908 inscribed below. The word LIBERTY is engraved on the headband of her headdress.

Reverse

An American bald eagle is found on the reverse field of 1908-D Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins. The image featured here was also designed by Saint-Gaudens and depicts the bald eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch wrapped around the sheaf. The eagle is depicted at rest with its wings at its side. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, TEN DOLLARS, and a D mint mark from the Denver Mint.

History

The Denver Mint struck the vast majority of the 1908 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins. Of the 1.177 million coins struck, 1.046 million came from the Denver Mint. The remainder were struck by the Philadelphia Mint with and without the motto and by the San Francisco Mint.
