The Great State of Texas has a history of independence and self-reliance, along with a streak of bravado that has shaped its history and its people. The Gonzales cannon is an enduring symbol of that attitude and fighting spirit that dates to the very founding moments of the place we now know as Texas. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 1 oz Silver Texas Come and Take It Round online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The area we known today as the Great State of Texas was once land held by the nation of Mexico. In the 1830s, a leadership change in Mexico that resulted in the rise of a dictator put the colony of Texas at odds with the central government in Mexico City. The Mexican military had previously given Tejanos and Texans in the area a cannon to use to defend themselves against indigenous tribes. When the Mexican Army came to take back the cannon, a revolution was born.
Obverse
On the obverse face of the 1 oz Silver Texas Come and Take It Round is a depiction of the Seal of Texas. Officially held by the governor as a symbol of the state, the seal includes the Lone Star of Texas at its center with branches of olive and live oak flanked around the star. In this design, a brilliant flash of light features behind the star with the words The Great State of Texas inscribed along the top rocker. The weight, metal content, and purity of the round feature below.
Reverse
The reverse depicts the image of the humble Gonzales cannon. There was nothing overwhelming in terms of force when it came to the Gonzales cannon. It was more a field artillery piece than a siege weapon, but it gave Texicans the upper hand against raiding indigenous tribes. When the Mexican Army sought to retrieve the cannon near Gonzales, the Texican militia made up for Tejanos and American-European immigrants to Texas defied the order. With the cannon set behind their lines, the Mexican Army was extended a simple invitation: there it is, come and take it.
History
The Texicans who fought in the Battle of Gonzales inspired a revolution that would see Texas become the independent Republic of Texas. After nearly a decade of independence and constant war with Mexico, Texas would join the United States of America and eventually serve as one of the main battlegrounds in the Mexican-American War that saw Mexico lose its last vestiges of control over any land that is now part of the United States of America.
