One of the shortest-lived designs in American coining history was the Standing Liberty Quarter. Created in 1916 during a historic era when the US Mint was replacing many of its existing coin designs with new, modern images, the Standing Liberty design entered circulation. However, it would only be in production on the US Quarter for 14 years. Today, you have the opportunity to buy 1 oz Copper Standing Liberty Quarter Rounds online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Introduced in 1916, the Standing Liberty Quarter was designed by Hermon Atkins MacNeil. It was difficult in the early years for the US Mint and MacNeil to come to a conclusion on the final image of the design as the obverse, in particular, as MacNeils design underwent three versions in its early year. One of the early issues was the fact that MacNeils first design depicted Liberty with a bare chest.
Obverse
The obverse face of 1 oz Copper Standing Liberty Quarter Rounds includes the image of Lady Liberty. She is depicted here standing in the gap between two walls. She holds a shield in one hand that has the US national shield on it to defend the nation. Her right hand rests on the other section of wall as she clutches an olive branch. The words In God We Trust are inscribed on the two different sections of wall, with seven stars on the left column and six stars on the right column for a total of 13 stars. Above the design, Liberty is inscribed.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 1 oz Copper Standing Liberty Quarters Rounds is a depiction of a set of eagles wings with a US national shield at the center that includes three stars on it. The American flag features above the seal with USA inscribed below it.
History
The Standing Liberty Quarter was introduced in 1916 by the US Mint and produced until 1930. It was suspended in 1930 with no new quarters made in the United States in 1931. Even though it was well ahead of the 25-year minimum for a replacement to be considered, the Standing Liberty design was replaced on the quarter in 1932 with the current bust of President George Washington.
MacNeils design was meant to capture the mood of America in 1916 as World War I raged in Europe and the nation remained neutral. His image of Liberty captures her as a defender of the nation. She looks to the heraldic east with her shield, wary of the conflict overseas, while her hand in heraldic west depicts the nations desire to remain at peace.
