The United States dime is one of the oldest denominations in circulation in the US and has been available since the 1790s. The 20th century saw the program go through three designs, with the Franklin Dime representing the current issue that has been available since 1946. Before that, the Mercury Dime was in circulation with the last Liberty design for the 10-cent piece. Today, you have the chance to purchase 1 oz Copper Mercury Dime Rounds online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Mercury Dime was one of three popular designs from the United States Mint that emerged in 1916 as the final three denominations to undergo a redesign in the early 20th century. The Mercury Dime was technically known as the Winged Liberty Dime, but because of Libertys resemblance in the design to the Roman messenger god, Mercury, the coin became popularly known as the Mercury Dime instead.
Obverse
The obverse face of the 1 oz Copper Mercury Dime Round includes a depiction of Lady Liberty. Known as Winged Liberty, she is shown in left-profile relief with a winged Phrygian cap on her head. The only inscription on this face of the round is the word Liberty stretched across the top rocker of the round. The image featured here was designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinam, the man who also famously created the Walking Liberty design that same year.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1 oz Copper Mercury Dime Round is a vision of a common design element. The design is used across the series of copper rounds from this private mint and includes a set of wings in the center. At the center of the wings is a shield with three stars on it. The American flag waves in the breeze above the design and the letters USA are featured below the design.
History
The Mercury Dime design replaced the Barber Coinage dime design and was beloved by Americans for its uniqueness and modern imagery when compared to the Barber Dime. The Mercury design was in production at the United States Mint from 1916 to 1945, eventually being replaced by the bust of President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in office in 1946. The Mercury Dime bust of Liberty can now be found on the American Eagle 1 oz Palladium Coin offered from the United States Mint in its bullion range of coins.
