Perry's Victory and Peace Memorial Silver Coin

Brief History

In the beginning of the War of 1812, Oliver Hazard Perry was sent to northern Ohio (near Lake Erie) to command the American forces stationed there. During his service, Perry managed to create a valuable naval unit to help hold off British advancement.

In September of 1813, the British attacked Lake Erie expecting a quick victory. The Battle of Lake Erie commenced, and everything seemed to point toward a British victory due to their modern and accurate canons. Under Perry's command, however, the U.S. ships were able to secure an unlikely victory. This victory cut off British supply routes, forcing them to abandon Detroit.

To commemorate Perry and this true underdog victory, construction of the Peace Memorial began in 1912, and President Franklin Roosevelt officially established the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial Monument on June 2, 1936. Today, the area sees more than 150,000 visitors per year.
