The Dutch 10 Guilder coin has four basic obverse designs, each featuring a different monarch of the Netherlands. The earliest versions display King Willem III, while later editions display Queen Wilhelmina. In total there are three different likenesses of Queen Wilhelmina; she reigned for many decades and the Royal Dutch Mint updated her portrait on numerous occasions.
While the obverse motif varied a bit year to year, the 10 Guilder’s reverse design remained relatively constant over the decades. The coin’s back side featured the country’s coat of arms in the center surrounded by the denomination “10 G.” The inscription “KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN” or “KINGDOM OF NETHERLANDS” appears at the periphery.
For many centuries, the Netherlands was a global economic powerhouse. The Dutch Empire extended across five continents and included some of the world’s most valuable territories. Their acquisitions were not merely random; the Dutch specifically targeted land with rich natural resources and strategic locations. Thanks to the country’s global reach, the currency of the Netherlands became known and accepted across the planet. The Dutch 10 Guilder coin, containing 0.1947 ounces of pure gold, was used to consummate business throughout the world.
The last 10 Guilder coins were struck in 1933, when the Netherlands was suffering the effects of the Great Depression. It was actually one of the last European countries to suspend production of circulating gold coins. France and Germany discontinued their gold coins around World War I, and England temporarily halted the sovereign in 1932. Although the 10 Guilder vanished from circulation over half a century ago, it has since found a new role as a bullion coin.
Dutch 10 Guilders are a popular way of owning bullion in a low-cost, divisible, and highly collectible form. They offer the convenient size of a fractional gold piece combined with the numismatic appeal of a vintage gold coin. Despite these advantages, 10 Guilders are often priced at a low margin over their melt value.

"
I usually buy anywhere from 5 to 100 coins at a time and I bought 5 of these over a week ago. Just once I'd like to get one of those exceptional coins that others seem to get . I usually only by European gold and the same thing with the older French franks some variation would be nice and I might buy many more. I got what I paid for as gold was at a low...."

"
Excellent value, beautiful, and filled with history! I ordered 5 guilders and received 2 with Wilhelmina as the monarch and 3 with Willem (the male pictured). The oldest coin was from 1875 and the newest from 1923."

"
I ordered the 10 Guilder and it came in excellent condition. I received a 1917 coin. Could not ask for more. If you are impatient you might not want to write a check for your orders. They take a very long time, but I can wait. I'd rather save on the total price by writing a check. Generally takes about 3-4 weeks. Nice coin. Thanks"

"
I wanted to pick up some gold from the various European countries that each side of my family came from, so I picked up one of these coins. To me, that's a good way to tie family history into precious metal collection.
I couldn't be happier with the quality of this coin!" |
