The obverse of this silver round features a stunning, full-body depiction of an 8-point buck (male deer with antlers) as turns its head toward the viewer. A doe (female) leaps in the background of the prairie habitat of Wisconsin. “WHITETAIL DEER” is inscribed.

Whitetail deer are named for the white fur on their tail. These deer have the ability to run up to 40 miles per hour and jump over fences 9 feet tall – their thin legs notwithstanding. Most deer can be found in heavy-treed areas and crop fields, where the food is plentiful and foliage for hiding is dense.

While the deer can be found throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, Wisconsin claims the deer as the state’s “wildlife animal.” Wisconsin’s state animal is the badger, but due to the deer’s value during hunting season, it was given its own status in 1957.

The common reverse of the American Wildlife Series features a stylized image of the United States of America under a bald eagle with a banner in its mouth that reads “By Thomas D. Rogers, Sr.” The round’s weight and purity are also inscribed inside the decorative border of five-point stars.

Thomas Rogers designed the obverse and common reverse of each round. Rogers has garnered experience and expertise from decades of work as a professional sculptor and engraver. Rogers career included ten years of employment at the U.S. Mint. Rogers provided designed exquisitely detailed images of some of the most remarkable creatures and landscapes in North America.
