Obverse

The obverse side of Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins includes a depiction of the Somalia coat of arms. The national coat of arms for Somalia features a crowned shield with a background field of horizontal lines and a single star at the center. Leopards support the shield on either side and come with crossed spears and fern leaves. Inscriptions include Somali Republic, individual date marks, and either 1000 Shillings or 100 Shillings depending on the date mark.

Reverse

On the reverse face of the Somalia Elephant Silver Coin is a design of the African bush elephant. The bush elephant is the largest and heaviest living land mammal. Its image changes each year on the reverse side of these coins and comes with the same inscriptions each year. The inscriptions read African Wildlife, Elephant, and 1 oz Ag 999 or 1 oz Ag 9999.

History

The African Wildlife Series Silver Elephants debuted for Somalia with 1 oz .999 pure silver. This was the standard from 2004 to 2015, with silver purity increasing to .9999 silver in 2016. Face values in the collection include 1,000 Shillings for coins issued from 2004 to 2006, with the value adjusted to 100 Shillings for all coins from 2007 onward.
