One of the most popular coin programs on the market is the Somalia Elephant Silver Coin. While this program has a history dating back prior to 2000, it’s still a long and confusing history about how these coins came to be. The overall series debuted in 1999 with the backing of Zambia. These coins are struck by the Bavarian State Mint and are technically a part of the African Wildlife Series. However, elephants are the only animals to ever be featured. Zambia issued these coins until 2003. Beginning in 2004, these coins started to be backed by Somalia.
While these Silver Coins have had the backing of Somalia since 2004, the Somali Republic has never acknowledged that the nation does indeed support these coins.
These coins are similar to Perth Mint coin programs, and the Chinese Panda Silver Coin series, in that the reverse image changes with each new year of issue.
These coins were originally issued as a 1 Troy oz coin with a purity of .999 silver and a face value of 1,000 shillings. Beginning in 2007, the face value was adjusted to just 100 shillings. In 2016, the purity was upped to .9999 pure silver.

The standard 1 oz BU coin is available in protective plastic flips, tubes of 20 coins, or Monster Boxes of 500 coins. Larger BU sizes are available in capsules. Proof coins come in display boxes.
