2021 Tuskegee Airmen – The Final ATB Silver Coin at Provident Metals

No coin program ever introduced by the United States Mint has delivered the diversity of design and options that the America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Series provides. Introduced with 2010 following passage of the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008, the America the Beautiful Silver Series offers 56 designs in total with five designs released annually in the collection. The 2021 ATB release is the only one to feature a single design and the Tuskegee Airmen feature in the final issue in the series. Now is your opportunity to learn more about the last coin in the series.

2021 Tuskegee Airmen Reverse

The reverse face of the 2021 ATB Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site 5 oz Silver Coins includes a depiction of the first African-American pilots to join the United States Army Air Forces. When the US Military began allowing African-Americans to train and fly aircraft for the Armed Forces, a series of airfields were established to train these new pilots, as well as training navigators, bombardiers, maintenance and support staff, and instructors.

In the reverse design element, a Tuskegee Airmen cadet pilot is preparing for flight by suiting up in his flight suit and helmet. He is shown standing in front of the control toward and Hangar One at Tuskegee Army Air Field. In the background overhead, two P-51 Mustangs conduct a flyby on the airfield. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include “Tuskegee Airmen,” “Alabama,” “2021,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “They Fought Two Wars.” The latter inscription indicates the fight to desegregate the American Armed Forces that African-Americans were waging. African-Americans wanted to serve their nation as well in World War II. Tuskegee Army Air Field was built for the United States Military as a segregated airbase for African-American pilot trainees only.

African-American soldiers looking to train as fighter pilots first completed initial flight training at Moton Field. A series of airfields in the area around Tuskegee, Alabama, was used to support the broader flight training of African-American soldiers. In total, more than 1,000 African-American aviators were trained for the war effort at Moton Field and Tuskegee Army Air Field.

2021 ATB Obverse

On the obverse of the 2021 ATB Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site 5 oz Silver Coins, you will find the portrait of President George Washington. The first man elected President of the United States of America, Washington’s bust has been on the obverse of the US quarter since 1932. The only presidential design to feature on an American coin for longer is the right-profile bust of President Abraham Lincoln on the US penny. This left-profile bust of Washington was created in 1932 by John Flanagan and modified for the larger format of the ATB 5 oz Silver Coins in 2010. The inscriptions found on this side of the coin include “United States of America,” “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “Quarter Dollar.” The burnished versions of the ATB 5 oz Silver Coins come with an additional “P” mint mark from the Philadelphia Mint that is located behind Washington’s neck.

2021 Release Details

The 2021 ATB 5 oz Silver Coin honoring Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site is available in three versions, two of which come directly from the United States Mint. The coins available in the 2021 Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site include the Brilliant Uncirculated, Burnished, and Colorized versions of the coin. The BU version of the coin is available to purchase individually, in multiples of 10, and in multiples of 100. Individual coins come with a protective plastic capsule, while 10s and 100s are in original US Mint packaging. These include mint tubes of 10 coins and Monster Boxes of 100 coins in 10-coin tubes.

Burnished ATB 5 oz Silver Coins are available to purchase with individual packaging. The burnished silver coins are prepared by the United States Mint by first polishing the 5 oz silver blanks in a drum with a polishing medium. The coins are always handled by gloved hands, from the moment each is pulled from the polishing drum to the moment it is struck in the coining press and removed for packaging. Burnished ATB Silver Coins are housed inside of US Mint presentation boxes with a themed shipper and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Colorized ATB 5 oz Silver Coins are, in reality, BU versions of the coin that have been purchased by a third-party authorized dealer. The coins are then given an application of colorized lacquer on the reverse design elements to bring the images to life in vibrant color. These coins are then packaged in presentation boxes as well. In the case of Colorized ATB 5 oz Silver Coins, colorization takes place at Emporium-Hamburg, a German authorized dealer.

History of the ATB Silver Series

The America the Beautiful Series of silver coins features a total of 56 silver coins. While the coin designs represent the various jurisdictions of the United States of America spread around the globe, the designs have a common theme focusing on federally-protected lands across the nation and its territories. The order of appearance in the series is based on the date when the site was established as a federally-protected unit from the oldest sites in 2010 to the most recent in 2021. For example, the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site was established in 1998, while Hot Springs National Park from the 2010 ATB Arkansas coin that debuted the collection was established in 1832.

The sites represented in this series feature units managed by the National Park Service, United States Forest Service, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Designs include the following types of units:

  • 48 National Park Service units: 18 national parks, 13 national historic sites and historical parks, 5 national monuments, 3 national lakeshores and seashores, 2 national military parks, 2 national memorials, 1 national recreation area, 1 national parkway, 1 national preserve, and 1 national river.
  • 6 US Forest Service units: 5 national forests and 1 wilderness area.
  • 2 US Fish and Wildlife Service units: 2 national wildlife refuges.

What’s Next for Collectible Silver Quarters?

When the ATB 5 oz Silver Coin Series ends with the release of the 2021 Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site Coin, collectible quarter issues can continue through 2031 with the authorization of the Secretary of the Treasury Department. The current Director of the United States Mint, David J. Ryder, has indicated that the Treasury Secretary has given initial approval to extend commemorative quarter production. Specific designs are unknown, but it is possible that future 5 oz Silver Coin production will feature reverse designs with wildlife species from the continent and youth sports in America, with a special 250th birthday coin for the United States in 2026.
