Proof American Eagle Gold Coins were released for the first time in 1986 by the United States Mint, but unlike the bullion version there was just a 1 oz coin available. The 1/2 oz Gold Eagle debuted in proof in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Gold Eagles in 1988.
