American Eagle Gold coins are available from the United States Mint each year in three versions: Brilliant Uncirculated, proof, and burnished. Proof American Eagle Gold coins were released in stages over the course of three years. The first was the 1 oz gold coin introduced in 1986 alongside the entire lineup of four gold bullion coins. In 1987, the 1/2 oz proof was released, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz proofs in 1988. The 1 oz proof is often the best-selling weight in the collectible range, though that is not the case in every single year as the 1/10 oz coin is also popular.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin, you will find an effigy of Lady Liberty. This iconic design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for use on the $20 Double Eagle Gold coin in circulation in the United States at that time. Liberty is featured in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand, an olive branch in her left, rays of sunshine emanating from behind her figure, and a ring of 50 stars around the coins design field.

Reverse

The reverse face of Proof American Eagle Gold Coins includes the image of a family of American bald eagles. This design includes a female eagle with a young hatchling inside of the family nest as a male eagle is depicted flying overhead. This image is exclusive to the American Eagle Gold Series and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek.

History

Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins hold the top two sales records for an individual date mark. The 1986 release sold a total of 446,290 coins, nearly three times the amount of the next-highest mintage in any of the fractional-ounce weights. The second-highest mintage in the series is the 1987 1 oz coin with 147,498 coins.

Ordering

These Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins have PR69 grades indicating the presence of full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Examples of acceptable flaws at this grade include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines. These must be located outside the primary focal points of the coin.

Please remember it is possible to receive matching date marks in this random year listing if you purchase multiples. All coins are chosen at our discretion based on availability once your payment is processed.
