One of the very first denominations ever issued in the United States of America, the Gold Half Eagle Coin was a $5 (USD) piece issued in the broader Gold Eagle range. This denomination series included a $2.50, $10, and $20 coin in addition to this denomination. The Half Eagle was available from 1795 to 1929, with new coining ending just years before the 1933 end of the gold standard in the US. Right now, you can buy Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins online at Provident Metals with a PCGS certification.

Obverse

The obverse side of the Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin includes a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This design was created in 1839 by Christian Gobrecht and was widely used. It is known as the Liberty Coronet as she wears a crown with the word Liberty inscribed on it. A humble ring of 13 stars representing the original American colonies encircles the design element on this face of the coin.

Reverse

On the reverse of the Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle is another design from Gobrecht. This image is his version of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Both this design and the obverse design remained largely unchanged for the nearly 70-year use of the images on the Gold Half Eagle. The only change to come to the reverse was the addition of a banner above the eagles head with the national motto In God We Trust starting on coins minted in 1866.

History

The Gold Half Eagle coins were designed by Christian Gobrecht. Mr. Gobrecht was a long-time designer at the Philadelphia Mint who went on to serve as the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1840 until his death in 1844. In addition to the popular Liberty Coronet used on many Gold Eagle denominations, he also created the famous Seated Liberty dollar design that was later adopted as the US Trade Dollar silver coin design.
