Obverse

Reverse

Both this design and the obverse design remained largely unchanged for the nearly 70-year use of the images on the Gold Half Eagle. The only change to come to the reverse was the addition of a banner above the eagles head with the national motto In God We Trust starting on coins minted in 1866.

History

The Gold Half Eagle coins were designed by Christian Gobrecht. Mr. Gobrecht was a long-time designer at the Philadelphia Mint who went on to serve as the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1840 until his death in 1844. In addition to the popular Liberty Coronet used on many Gold Eagle denominations, he also created the famous Seated Liberty dollar design that was later adopted as the US Trade Dollar silver coin design.
