The Half Eagle Gold Coin from the United States Mint was the first gold denomination issued by the United States Mint when it debuted in 1795. Available through 1929, the Half Eagle Gold Coin featured five different design combinations in its history, with the longest of those being the Liberty Half Eagle. Provident Metals now offers the Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin with certification to you for online purchasing.
Highlights:
When you purchase Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins in this product listing, the items you receive come with a protective slab from the PCGS or NGC. These coins have Mint State 64 certifications that indicate the presence of average mint luster for the date mark and small clusters of contact marks or hairlines. Some of these flaws may be in the primary fields, but most are outside the primary fields.
Obverse
The obverse side of Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins includes a depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief. Known as the Coronet Head or Liberty Head design, this image was the fourth to feature on the obverse of the Half Eagle Gold Coin and the longest-lasting at nearly 70 years in production. It captures Liberty wearing her hair in a loose bun with a coronet crown. There are 13 stars around her figure and a date mark at the bottom.
Reverse
On the reverse face of Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins is an image of the heraldic eagle. The eagle design is similar to other iterations of the heraldic eagle, but does feature a smaller shield on the birds chest. Inscriptions on coins dated 1839 to 1865 read United States of America and Five D. Coins issued from 1866 to 1908 have a banner included above the birds head that reads In God We Trust.
History
Christian Gobrecht was the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and is famous for both his Liberty Coronet design for gold coins as well as his Seated Liberty design for the US silver dollar. The Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin is the only denomination in the Eagle series that was struck by all seven historic US branch mint locations: Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco among the current mints, and New Orleans, Dahlonega, Charlotte, and Carson City among defunct branch mint locations. The West Point Mint was not in operation when the series ended in 1908.
