From 1795 to 1933, the United States Mint issued the gold coins of the US Eagle denomination for use in everyday commerce within the country. The series originally consisted of $10, $5, and $2.50 Eagles, known fondly as the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle, respectively. A $20 Double Eagle was later introduced in 1849. All of these coins are available in Extremely Fine or better condition. This roughly equates to between 40 and 45 on the Sheldon Numeric Scale and refers to coins with light wear patterns on the high points of relief, as well as the potential for traces of mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse side of the Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins in this 4-Coin Set comes with a left-profile bust of Liberty. This design shows her head with her hair in a bun, strands of curls running down her neck, and a coronet crown with the word LIBERTY engraved upon it. There is a ring of 13 stars around the bust and a date mark at the bottom.
Reverse

The design shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The field includes inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D. Coins dated 1866 to 1907 have an additional banner in the design with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST engraved.
History
The $5 Half Eagle Gold Coin was one of two denominations, along with the $2.50 Quarter Eagle, to feature five designs in total. From 1834 to 1838, these coins featured the short-lived Classic Head image of Lady Liberty.
