Pre-1933 American gold coins represent a unique opportunity to purchase gold. The only modern gold coins produced by the United States Mint are bullion investment-grade and collectible specimens. Prior to 1933 though, the United States issued gold coins for circulation use for nearly 140 years. One of the oldest coin denominations is the $2.50 Quarter Eagle. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase a certified Pre-33 Liberty Quarter eagle $2.50 Gold Coin from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a PCGS or NGC protective plastic slab!
  • Liberty design used between 1840 and 1907!
  • Limited availability of graded coins!
  • Contains .121 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • The face value of $2.50 (USD) is backed by the United States.
  • Graded Mint State 61 by the Professional Coin Grading Service or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • The obverse features a Liberty portrait in left-profile relief.
  • On the reverse is the heraldic eagle of the United States.

The Liberty Head design from the Quarter Eagle series of circulation gold coins is what you will find on these specimens. Also known as the Coronet Head, Christian Gobrecht designed this left-profile bust of Liberty for the Quarter Eagle in 1840 and would go on to feature on the obverse of the coins through 1907 when it was eventually replaced with the Indian Head design from Bely Lyon Pratt.

Obverse

For the obverse of Pre-33 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coins, the US Mint featured a left-profile bust of Liberty. Her hair is pulled back in a loose bun at the back of her head and she wears a coronet crown with the word Liberty inscribed on it. The design field includes only 13 stars and a date mark around Libertys portrait.

Reverse

On the reverse, Pre-33 Liberty Quarter Eagle $2.50 Gold Coins include the heraldic eagle of the United States used in this era. Like other gold coins in the US Eagle denominations of this era, there is no inscription of E Pluribus Unum on the reverse. Outside of the heraldic eagle design, you will find only the denomination as 2 1/2 D and United States of America.

History

The Quarter Eagle coin was part of the broader US Eagle denomination series that included the $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and later the $20 Double Eagle. The Quarter Eagles Liberty design as found on these coins is considered the most popular in the series and enjoyed the longest production run.

Ordering

Your Pre-33 Liberty Quarter Eagle $2.50 Gold Coin has a Mint State 61 certification from either the PCGS or NGC. MS61 coins have diminished mint luster with clusters of large and small contact marks, noticeable hairlines, and scuff marks. We do not guarantee which grading house label you will receive, but the coin is guaranteed to have the MS61 grade.
