The most popular and longest-lasting design on the US Eagle denominations was the Liberty Head, or Coronet Head, design. Created in 1836 by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, the design was featured on all four denominations of the US Eagle and also inspired the design of the short-lived US $1 Gold Coin. Obverse

Liberty Head is depicted on the obverse side of the Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coin. This design was the longest-running image in the US Eagle denomination. It features Lady Liberty in left-profile relief wearing the coronet crown with the word Liberty inscribed on it. Her hair is up in a loose bun at the back of her head with some strands running down her neck. There are 13 stars engraved around her head with a date mark at the bottom.

Reverse

Christian Gobrechts version of the heraldic eagle features on the reverse of Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coins. This design shows the eagle ready for flight while clutching the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war. The US shield is on the birds chest while United States of America and 2 1/2 D. are inscribed around the design rocker.

History

The design of the Liberty Head artwork, or Coronet Head, was created by Christian Gobrecht in 1836. It first featured on the US $10 Eagle coin and would go on to feature on the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle starting in 1840, and later on the Double Eagle starting in 1849.
