With your purchase of the Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coin in this Provident Metals listing, you receive a coin with a Mint State 63 certification from either the PCGS or NGC. Coins in this condition exhibit slightly impaired mint luster with numerous small, scattered contact marks in and out of the primary focal fields and a few scattered hairlines that are visible without magnification.

We cannot guarantee which grading house issued in the certification to the coin you receive. All coins are chosen at our discretion from the available stock in our vault at the time your payment is processed. If you purchase multiples, you may receive coins with matching grading house labels.

Obverse

The obverse face of the Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coins includes the iconic image of Liberty created by Christian Gobrecht. Known as the Coronet Head, Liberty is featured in left-profile relief with a coronet crown inscribed with Liberty on it and her hair up in a loose bun. There are 13 stars around her bust and a date mark below. This effigy of Liberty was used across all denominations of the US Eagle coins for the longest period of time. It featured on these Quarter Eagles from 1840 to 1907.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle is a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. The small surface area of the Quarter Eagle prevented the inclusion of E Pluribus Unum on these coins, as found on other denominations. The inscriptions featured on this side include United States of America and 2 1/2 D.

History

The Liberty Quarter Eagle was the longest-running design in the series. It was preceded by the Capped Bust and Classic Head between 1795 and 1839, and eventually succeeded by the Indian Quarter Eagle design from 1907 to 1933.
