The largest denomination in the US Eagle program issued from 1795 to 1933 was the Double Eagle. Introduced in 1849 as a result of the California Gold Rush and its influx of gold to the US Treasury, the Double Eagle Gold Coin had a face value of $20 (USD) and was the only coin in the series to feature just two different designs. The latter of the two designs is remembered as the most popular and was produced from 1907 to 1933. Today, you have the chance to buy certified Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was approached by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help redesign national denominations in the early 20th century. All four denominations in the US Eagle series were redesigned during this period, with Saint-Gaudens redesigning both the US Eagle and the US Double Eagle gold coins.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse side of Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins. This groundbreaking design features Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer with a torch held aloft in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design on this face of the coin included a ring of 46 stars from 1907 to 1911 reflecting the number of states in the Union. From 1912 to 1933, the ring was expanded to 48 stars to reflect the admission of Arizona and New Mexico into the Union in 1912. Early 1907 releases had a date mark in Roman numerals, while all coins issued from late 1907 onward have Arabic numerals.

Reverse

An American bald eagle soaring over the sun as it rises at the bottom of the design field on the reverse of the Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins. This image also went through two design iterations. The 1907 coin had only United States of America and Twenty Dollars inscribed above the eagle. In 1908, the national motto of In God We Trust was added along the crest of the sun beneath the rays.

History

The US Double Eagle Gold Coin was introduced in 1849 and initially featured the Christian Gobrecht Liberty design. From 1907 to 1933, this Saint-Gaudens design was issued on the obverse of the coins.
