The Double Eagle Gold Coin was the last one added to the US Eagle denominations in the 19th century. Debuting in 1849 at the height of the California Gold Rush, the Double Eagle went through just two design features over the next 80-plus years of availability. Most of that timeframe saw the Liberty Double Eagle produced for circulation. Provident Metals currently has Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins in certified condition for you to purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase these Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins, you get a coin with a Mint State 65 certification. Coins with this grade showcase an attractive, high-quality luster and strike for the date mark and mint. You may notice a few small, scattered contact marks or two larger marks on the coins. One or two small hairlines may also be visible as well as light scuff marks on the highest points of the design. Overall, the coins have a very pleasing eye appeal.
Provident Metals selects these coins at random once your payment has been processed. We guarantee that each has an MS65 certification, but that grade could have come from either the PCGS or NGC. We cannot guarantee the date mark of your coin or the design type on the reverse.
Obverse
Lady Liberty features on the obverse of the Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin in a design known as the Coronet Head. Libertys hair flows down the back of her neck with some of it pulled up in a loose bun behind the coronet crown that has the word Liberty inscribed on it. A ring of 13 stars encircles her bust with the date mark at the bottom of the design field.
Reverse
A version of the Great Seal of the United States is depicted on the reverse of all Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins. The coin includes a circle of 13 stars above the American bald eagle, which clutches the arrows of war and olive branch of peace in its talons. The US national shield is on the birds chest. United States of America is inscribed on this face of the coins, with a face value of Twenty D. on coins dated 1849 to 1876. Coins dated 1849 to 1866 lack the national motto, but In God We Trust was added to coins dated 1866 to 1907. The face value is marked as Twenty Dollars on coins dated 1877 to 1907.
History
James B. Longacre designed the images on the obverse and reverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins. He served as the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1844 till his death in 1869.
