The $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin was the largest denomination of American gold coinage ever released for circulation. The coins were introduced following the California Gold Rush in the late 1840s and predominantly used by Americans in international commercial transactions. Obverse

Lady Liberty graces the obverse side of all Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins. The design shown here was developed in 1838 by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Longacres design debuted in 1838 on the $20 Liberty Eagle Coin and came to the Double Eagle Gold Coin in 1850 when it was first issued. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include the word Liberty on the coronet worn by Liberty, as well as a date mark at the bottom. You will also notice a ring of 13 stars around Libertys bust.

Reverse

An early version of the US heraldic eagle is found on the reverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins. This design, also from Longacre, featured only on the Liberty Double Eagle coins. It includes rays of sunshine connecting the outstretched wingtips of the bald eagle. The US national shield is shown on the chest of the bird with the olive branch of peace and arrows of war visible in its talons. Coins dated 1850-1866 feature only a circle of 13 stars over the eagles head, while those dated 1866-1907 have a modified ring of 13 stars with In God We Trust inscribed within.

History

It was a popular movement after the US Civil War to include the national motto In God We Trust on all American coinage as a means of healing the wounds of the war. As a result, for example, the US Eagle Gold Coins all had the motto added to the reverse starting in 1866.
