The Pre-33 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins from the United States Mint can be hard to find in the 21st century. Executive Order 6102 signed in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt outlawed private gold ownership and ordered the collection of American circulating gold coins to be melted down. Any surviving coin from this era should be treasured. Today, you have the opportunity to get Pre-33 $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold 2-Coin Sets online at Provident Metals.

The Liberty Head design on the Double Eagle Gold Coin was issued from 1849 when the first proofs to establish the series were struck until 1907. The design on these coins came from James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The Saint-Gaudens design for the series was struck from 1907 until the cancellation of the series in 1933.

Obverse

On the obverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins is an effigy of Liberty. The Liberty Head design was a left-profile bust of Liberty wearing the coronet crown with inscriptions of LIBERTY on the crown, 13 stars around the portrait, and a date mark. The Saint-Gaudens design features Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The inscriptions on this coin read LIBERTY and the date mark.

Reverse

The reverse side of the coins in the Pre-33 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin Sets depict American bald eagles. Liberty Head coins have a heraldic eagle design. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on all coins. Until 1866, the coins lacked IN GOD WE TRUST, and until 1876, the denomination was engraved as TWENTY D. instead of TWENTY DOLLARS. The Saint-Gaudens reverse shows a bald eagle gliding over the sun as it rises to greet a new date. In 1907, the coins lacked the national motto. From 1908 onward, IN GOD WE TRUST was inscribed.

History

These are the only two designs that were ever struck in this series. The Saint-Gaudens design has been remembered as the greatest American coin design of all time and features on the obverse of the modern American Eagle Gold Bullion coin.

Ordering

Pre-33 $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold 2-Coin Sets come with two coins, one from each series. The date marks will vary and all coins are in Very Fine+ condition. Coins in this condition have medium to trace wear on the designs, with most major design elements still visible. There may be traces of mint luster remaining as well. Each coin comes with its own plastic flip.
