The US $10 Eagle Gold Coin was one of the longest-running denominations in American history. First introduced in 1792, it was struck anew each year from 1838 to 1933 with no interruptions in coining and had previously been available from 1792 to 1804. Existing specimens with a certification make up a small number of the coins still available to modern investors and collectors. Today, you have the chance to get a certified Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Liberty Eagle Gold Coin was introduced as the second design in the history of the $10 US Eagle. It was produced for the longest period of time covering 1838 to 1907. The gold content of US coins stabilized in 1838 at exactly 90% gold and 10% copper by weight. In 1837, the US had increased its gold content to 90% gold after previously abandoning 22-karat gold content (91.67%) in 1834. However, for a time the coins actually had 90% gold, 5% copper, and 5% silver.
Obverse
Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse of the Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin in this listing. This design comes from 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Christian Gobrecht. It depicts Liberty with the coronet crown on her head and 13 stars around her figure.
Reverse
The heraldic eagle of the United States is shown on the reverse of Pre-33 $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins. Also created by Gobrecht, the design features the eagle with the US national shield, arrows of war, and olive branch of peace. Coins issued from 1838 to 1866 have United States of America and Ten D. inscribed upon them. Coins from 1866 to 1907 also have a banner above the bird that reads In God We Trust.
History
Between 1837 and 1840, the United States Mint began to phase out silver content from its metallic alloy in gold coins. It was gradually reduced to zero, with the US Eagle the first coin to reach that balance of 90% gold and 10% copper.
