Gold coins issued in the United States prior to the end of the gold standard in 1933 are referred to collectively as Pre-33 gold. These include the former $1 (USD) gold coin issued from 1849 to 1889. This large gold coin went through three obverse design iterations, with Type 3 available for circulation for the longest period during this 50-year stretch. Provident Metals now offers the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin to you for online purchasing.
When you purchase a Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin through this product listing, Provident Metals sends you a gold coin with a Mint State 63 certification. Coins in this condition showcase slightly impaired mint luster with numerous small contact marks and a few scattered heavier marks. Small hairlines will be visible and detracting scuff marks or defects are also possible.
Date marks and specific grading house labels are chosen at random in this listing. We select your coin once your payment has been processed. If you purchase more than one coin, please remember that you could receive several of the same date marks and grading house labels.
The obverse field of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin in this listing has the Type 3 design. Known as the larger head design, this left-profile bust of Liberty comes with a full feathered headdress on her head and the nation of issue inscribed around.
On the reverse face of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin, the second iteration of reverse design elements is featured. While the obverse side included three different designs during its history, the reverse used the second design during the second and third design issues of the obverse. This side includes the denomination and date mark in smaller text with a larger, full wreath around those markings.
All obverse designs of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin were created by James B. Longacre. His first design was reminiscent of the Liberty Coronet design from the Gold Eagle denominations. In 1854, a smaller head with a feathered headdress was put on the coins. After just two years, a larger version of that head was created for the Type 3 release.
