The Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 1 was the first design issue of the $1 gold coin series. Introduced in 1849, the $1 gold coin featured a Liberty design on the obverse from then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, James B. Longacre, and a reverse design from Peter Filatreu Cross.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 1 is a left-profile bust of Liberty. Inspired by the famed Liberty Coronet design from the US Eagle denominations, this bust of Liberty shows her figure with a coronet crown in her hair and a ring of 13 stars around the design element. Longacre was the 4th Chief Engraver and his Liberty Coronet design featured here closely resembles that of his predecessor, 3rd Chief Engraver Christian Gobrechts design on the Eagle.

Reverse

The reverse face of Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins includes a small wreath with three inscriptions. The nation of issue is inscribed around the design field as United States of America, with 1 Dollar and a date mark in the center. A small, thin wreath is shown around the denomination and date.

History

The Type 1 $1 gold coin was issued with these designs from 1849 to 1854. Longacre redesigned both the obverse and reverse in 1854, and redesigned the obverse only again in 1856. The final two versions depicted Liberty as an indigenous figure with a feathered headdress.
