The United States silver dollar coins were popular and widely used in the 19th century, even into the 20th century. Less popular, but equally beautiful, was the United States gold dollar coin issued between 1849 and 1889. The coin initially featured the same Liberty coronet design featured on the Eagle gold denominations, but that was only for the first five years of availability. Provident Metals currently offers Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type 1 with a certification for you to purchase online.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with the protective plastic slab of the PCGS or NGC!
  • Produced between 1849 and 1854!
  • Limited number of certified gold coins available!
  • Contains .048375 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Issued a face value of $1 (USD) by the government of the United States.
  • Bears a Grade of Mint State 63 from the Professional Coin Grading Service or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • Liberty in left-profile relief on the obverse.
  • Coin denomination and a wreath on the reverse.
  • Please note you could get matching coin dates when buying several coins.

When you purchase these Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type 1, you receive a specimen that has a Mint State 63 certification from either the PCGS or NGC. A coin in this condition showcases impaired mint luster with numerous small contact marks possible both inside and outside of the primary focal points of the coin. There is also the potential for a few scattered hairlines.

Please note that we do not guarantee the date marks on the coins in this listing. The Type 1 Liberty design in this series was available only from 1849 to 1854. If you buy several gold coins, please remember you could get matching dates. It is also possible to get matching grading house labels from either the PCGS or NGC.

Obverse

Liberty is shown on the obverse of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin in left-profile relief. Designed by James B. Longacre, this image was developed as the design of this coin based on the same Liberty Coronet bust on the Eagle denominations. It shows Liberty wearing the coronet crown with only a field of 13 stars around her portrait.

Reverse

The coin denomination and a wreath are all that feature on the reverse of Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins. Designed by Peter Filatreu Cross, this design includes the denomination in the center as 1 Dollar, with a date mark also inscribed in the middle. This is surrounded immediately by a small wreath with United States of America inscribed along the outer rocker of the coins.

History

The $1 Liberty Gold Coin would eventually be redesigned in 1854 and again in 1856 by James B. Longacre to feature Liberty wearing a headdress instead of the coronet. The reverse was also redesigned by Longacre to include a larger wreath with no inscription of the nation of issue.
