With your purchase of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins in this listing comes a protective plastic slab to house the coin. The NGC or PCGS has issued a Mint State 64 grade to these coins. An MS64 coin exhibits average mint luster with a few scattered hairlines or a small patch of hairlines, as well as light scattered marks, with a few possibly located in the prime focal areas.

Obverse

On the obverse of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins in the Type 3 release is a depiction of Liberty wearing a tall, feathered headdress. This design was adopted in 1856 and is known as the Large Head design as it was enlarged from the first Indian Head Liberty design produced in 1854. This design was a modified version of James B. Longacre’s 1854 Indian Head Liberty design and features an inscription of United States of America around the design field.

Reverse

The reverse side of the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin from the Type 3 release has the second version of the reverse design. The coins originally had a design from Peter Filatreu Cross with a small wreath, the denomination, and date mark, along with the nation of issue above. Longacre redesigned the reverse in 1854 for use on Type 2 and Type 3 coins without the nation of issue and a larger wreath around 1 Dollar and the date mark.

History

The Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coin was available from 1849 to 1889. Following the Civil War, the $1 Gold Coin from the United States Mint was not as widely produced. During the Civil War, the coins were hoarded as a result of a shortage of gold coins in circulation and higher demand for hard currency.
